This young adult fantasy of dubious magic and rough-edged relationships is a stand-alone novel, but also the first of seven in a series.
The village boys unjustly avoided and feared Finn because he had always been larger. Finn did not mind this, and spent his free time after harvest growing self-sufficient and exploring the neighboring mountains alone.
Adela however liked Finn and when she found a list of missing children carved into the entrance trees at agate path leading into Knock Forest she asked him to take the path with her.
For Finn, Knock Forest presented another challenge and the opportunity to be with Adela. For Adela, who had secrets and unrealized hopes, Knock Forest represented a journey into the past and a resolution for her hidden losses.
Unaware of Adela's undisclosed and hardly-believable reasons for entering the forest, Finn agreed to accompany her although he did not believe in the "mumbo jumbo" usually spouted by Adela. Finn held no belief in magic but Adela, because of her losses, needed to believe in something impossible.
While grappling with nature and tackling their relationship issues, neither could stay on the agate path and both would be changed and answers would be found.

My daughter read this book in two nights just absorbing it. I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed it as much as her. I'll have to read the next book.
Fast moving, entertaining and fanciful story. My teenage son, who eschews reading, loved it! Looking forward to the next book in the series!
IT was an ok book... A little strange and amateurish. My 12 year old was only so so on the book as well.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a wholesome yet exciting series. I got to like the main characters in the book and am pleased to hear they will carry on to others in the series.
Wow. An incredible debut novel. Like other recent juvenile fiction novels (i.e. Hunger Games) although the content and story are geared toward teenagers, it is such a good story that it works for all ages. I highly recommend this novel, and can't wait for the promised sequels.
